Google Driveは個人的に長期間重宝しているオンラインストレージで、ブラウザ版・アプリ版（バックアップと同期）ともに利用している。
Google Workspace（有料）に加入しているユーザーの場合、ドライブファイルストリーム」というサービスが利用できることからPCの容量を使用することなくフォルダーをオンラインで操作できるが、無料ユーザーが使う「バックアップと同期」についてはGoogle Driveで利用しているフォルダーを全てダウンロードしているイメージなので、容量の削減には利用できなかった。
しかし、2021年7月12日に投稿されたGoogle Workspaceのブログにて、「Drive for Desktop（パソコン版Googleドライブ）」という新サービスが発表された。
今回の記事では投稿時にわかっている情報をお伝えしようと思う。
バックアップと同期・ドライブファイルストリームは統合される
上述したように、無料ユーザーかGoogle Workspaceかで利用できる同期ソリューションが異なっていたが、これらは「Drive for Desktop（パソコン版Googleドライブ）」登場までに統合されるとのこと。
これにより、無料ユーザーでもPCの容量を使用することなくGoogle Driveへファイルのアップデートが可能になる。
Before launching Drive for desktop, we had two sync solutions available: Backup and Sync, which was built primarily for consumer users, and Drive File Stream, which was built for business users. Now, we’re unifying these sync clients into the new Drive for desktop, bringing people the best and most used features from both Backup and Sync and Drive File Stream, including the ability to:
- Upload and sync photos and videos to Google Photos and/or Google Drive
- Sync external storage devices to the cloud, including flash drives and external hard drives
- Mirror Drive files on your desktop, which stores your files on your local device and enables quicker access to your content
今後の予定
投稿日時点（2021/07/16）では、今後数週間で「バックアップと同期」を利用しているユーザーを対象に、今回の「Drive for Desktop（パソコン版Googleドライブ）」への移行を求めるポップアップが表示されるようになり、これは2021年9月までに移行することが推奨との事だ。

In the coming weeks, Backup and Sync users will begin to see prompts asking them to transition to Drive for desktop, which we recommend doing by September 2021. After this point, users will see an in-product notification notifying them they’ll need to transition to continue syncing their files. まとめ
「バックアップと同期」ユーザーにとっては全てが朗報。Googleドライブを50GB利用している場合はパソコンの容量が50GB空くことになる。
